Lyme disease

Lyme disease is an infection transmitted through a deer tick bite. Pregnancy doesn't predispose you to getting Lyme disease or make it any worse if you get it. The great news is that no evidence suggests that Lyme disease causes any harm to the fetus. The main problem is that it may make you sick. If you think a deer tick has bitten you, let your practitioner know. She may want to draw blood to see whether you have contracted Lyme disease and possibly start you on antibiotics to prevent long-term effects.

Tick Bites

Certain species of ticks can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. If a tick is found on your child's skin, it should be removed carefully right away, because the chance of getting a tick-borne illness increases with the Call your child's doctor to discuss the need for examinations, tests, and treatment. Bring the tick with you if possible. The doctor may recommend blood tests to evaluate for possible Lyme disease or other tick-borne illness (often done some time after the bite occurs because these tests are usually negative just after tick exposure). In the meantime, be sure to discuss with the doctor what symptoms to watch for. (See Lyme Disease in Chapter 30, Childhood Infections.)

Arboviruses, transmitted by insects such as ticks and mosquitoes, can also cause encephalitis. West Nile encephalitis virus is an example. Measles, mumps, chicken pox, and mononucleosis can sometimes cause encephalitis, usually a mild case. Rabies can also cause encephalitis. Although rare, herpes simplex virus, the virus that causes cold sores, can cause a serious, life-threatening form of encephalitis. Tuberculosis, syphilis, and Lyme disease can also cause brain inflammation.
