2617 Other local conazole antimycotics

Pharmacology and toxicology

Bifonazole, croconazole, econazole, fenticonazole, isoconazole, ketoconazole, omoconazole, oxiconazole, sertaconazole, sulcona-zole, and tioconazole are imidazole derivatives, and structurally and functionally related to clotrimazole. No teratogenic effects have been observed as a result of local treatment with these antimycotics. For econazole, these findings were confirmed in a population-based case control study (Czeizel 2003A). They are, however, less tried than clotrimazole and miconazole (King 1998).

Recommendation. Bifonazole, croconazole, econazole, fenticonazole, isoconazole, ketoconazole, omoconazole, oxiconazole, sertaconazole, sulcona-zole, and tioconazole are second-choice antimycotics for local therapy. Nystatin, clotrimazole, and miconazole are preferred.
